Interaction of mode-one internal solitary waves of opposite polarity in double-pycnocline stratifications

Numerical simulations of the interaction internal solitary waves (ISWs) opposite polarity are conducted by solving incompressible Euler equations under Boussinesq approximation. A double-pycnocline stratification is used. method to determine when ISWs both polarities exist also presented. The confirm previous work that same soliton-like; however, here it shown a fast ISW with as Korteweg–de Vries (KdV) wave catches up and interacts slower polarity, can be far from soliton-like. energy in KdV-polarity increase more than factor 5 while negative-KdV-polarity decrease 50 %. Large trailing trains may generated some cases multiple KdV formed interaction.
